Looking for a Business to Join

July 26th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

As you begin your search for a work-at-home job or the “right” home business, remember that if it requires you to pay an amount of money to join, it’s more than likely not going to have a great payout. Most of the time, these people make their money by telling you how to sell the exact same information they just sold you!

One thing to keep in mind is, “If it sounds too good to be true (and many of them do!), it probably is.” Don’t fall prey to all the hype of astounding fortunes made overnight or claims that say “I made $XX,XXX by sitting at home and playing with the kids or while on vacation”; it doesn’t usually work that way! Any legitimate business will take a good amount of consistent work and effort.

I cannot encourage you enough to Research, Research, Research–BEFORE joining a company or investing in a business. It is so sad to read about those who have lost money they’ve invested in hopes of making a profitable income in return.

Here are some resources I’ve found on the internet that may be in your best interest to check out as you make your decision:

National Association for the Self-Employed

Pyramid Scheme Alert

Scam.com

ScamBusters.com

Looks Too Good To Be True.com

Remember to research before making any decisions. It’s much better to play it “safe than sorry”.

Why Start an Online Home Business using a Blog?

July 22nd, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Trent Brownrigg

These days almost everyone has heard of blogs. To put it simply a blog is a web site that is made up of posts about a certain topic and is updated regularly. However, that is the very simple definition. A blog can be so much more than that. If you are starting an online home business with a small budget then there are many ways a blog can help.

First, with a few clicks of your mouse you can get your thoughts, sale pitches, business articles and various web page links out to the world by publishing it on your blog. This is especially great if you have started your online home business using any type of affiliate marketing. You as a blog owner registers with an affiliate program of your choice and then you put various links, banners, products, reviews on your blog. When visitors click on these links and purchase a product, you will be paid a commission for generating the sale. How much easier can it get?

The second way a blog can help in starting your online home business is that it is a lot cheaper then getting a web site. You can start a blog for free with services like blogger.com. Compare that to buying a domain name and paying for the cost of designing a web site. Add to that the monthly cost of web hosting and the costs start adding up really quick. A blog is a great free alternative until the money starts coming in from your online home business.

Third, less technical knowledge is needed so it is easier and faster for the beginner to start on the web. There is no need to learn html or programming because the software is already there for you to use. Also most successful marketers agree that to get better rankings and more traffic to your site you must update the content often and consistently. With a blog you can add or update the content whenever you want, quickly and easily, without hiring someone else to do it for you.

Also, blogging can give your online home business an edge over the competition because it is in real time and there is no waiting. Customers and visitors of your blog can easily join in and post their own comments and suggestions to your site and your products. It is a good tool to have testimonials about your product or service on your blog. Also be sure to post answers to any questions or problem in a quick and complete manner. It shows that you are willing to help and have good customer service. You will quickly gain repeat customers and acquire a following. Customers always prefer personalized attention.

In summary, blogging should definitely not be overlooked as a great online home business tool. It is especially helpful to the beginning internet marketer because it is cheap and it has few boundaries. Add in your own creativity and you are well on your way to establishing a successful online home business. Finally, don’t let all of this fool you… Yes it’s easy to start an online home business using blogs but you still have to get traffic to your blog and that is a whole other story.

Knock Down Writer’s Block!

July 21st, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Terry Detty

Do you regularly find yourself writing a collection of articles? In all honesty, it really doesn’t matter if you write for a career or just for fun; writing is writing. However, no matter what your reason for writing, there many come a time when you are unable to do so. This is most often due to writer’s block. Writer’s block is a common occurrence, even among professional writers. Although it is hard to associate writer’s block with good news, there is good news. That good news is that there are a number of different approaches that you can take to get around writer’s block. Just a few of these approaches are outlined below.

Perhaps, the most effective way to get over your writer’s block is to not think about writing for a while. The amount of time that you are able to take off will depend on your deadline, if you have one. Even if you are only able to take a ten-minute break from writing, you are urged to do so. However, it has been noted that the longer the break the easier it is to overcome writers block. Depending on your own personal preferences, you could take a break and curl up with a book, wash your dirty dishes, or run a few errands. It really doesn’t matter, as long as you can take a break. When you have spent a few minutes or a few hours away from the pressures of writing, you are more likely to overcome your writer’s block; thus making it easier for you to concentrate and write.

In addition to taking a break, you can also continue working; however, you may want to think about changing the way that you are working, even if it is only temporarily. For instance, when you write do you have to be surrounded by peace and quiet or do you like a little background noise? If you prefer quiet, you may want to think about turning your television on in the background. In fact, you may even want to think about putting in your favorite music CD and putting on a pair of headphones. Many writers find it inspiring to listen to their favorite music groups or songs. If you prefer to work with background noise, it may be a good idea to give peace and quiet a try. Some times, the best way to overcome writers block to change the way that you are writing.

Speaking of the way that you work, how exactly do you work? Better yet, where do you work? Do you sit at a desktop computer? Although desktop computers are nice, they may be limiting your abilities. Whether you have your own office or if you are just working for a desktop computer setup in your living room, you may need a change. This change is best implemented if you can purchase a laptop computer. Laptop computers allow you to move, virtually anywhere; you can work in you living room, or on your bed, or even outside at a picnic table. In fact, you are urged to find a surrounding that inspires you. Inspiration is the best way to get over writer’s block. That is why it may be best for you experiment and find which areas you are able to work in and which areas you are unable to work in.

It is unknown exactly what causes writer’s block; perhaps it is boredom or the loss of thought. No matter what the reason for writer’s block, it is something that many writers experience. The above mentioned approaches are just a few of the many that you can take to overcome writers block. Writer’s block, its cause, and its cure are all unique among different writers. That is why you will need to experiment and find the approach that best helps you to overcome writer’s block. Keeping the above mentioned points in mind will help.

Meta Tags, Titles & Their Uses

July 20th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Terry Detty

It is best to plot out how you’ll use meta tags on a particular page before even writing the content for the page. Lots of people will write the content of the page and then try to sprinkle in keywords in the meta tags. This is an ineffective way of doing things, as it usually makes your page confusing to visitors. Before writing content, take a minute to pick out 3-4 primary keywords. Then take another minute to write phrases from those words. Once you’ve done that, you can begin writing your content around the keywords.

How do I select proper keywords to enter into the meta tags? This is an excellent question. Really, there are two main rules of thumb for selecting proper keywords.

#1: Base your keywords off of the content of your site.

For instance, if you are running a digital photography site, your keywords could be digital, photographs, photography etc. You’ll want to steer clear of silly keywords that don’t relate to your site. These would include keywords completely irrelevant to your site.

#2: Make sure your keywords can flow naturally throughout the content of your site. Try to pick words that you can easily incorporate into the content of your site and that make sense. You must remember that actual people are reading your site—the content(and keywords) MUST make sense to not only search engines, but also to the people who visit your site. Thus, the keywords you choose must fit the content of your site perfectly.

How do I write a good description tag?

What description tags essentially do is briefly inform the search bot/web crawler what a site is about. Therefore, to write a good description tag, you must be able to write a good, brief description of what your site is about. It is important to note that you are limited to 200 characters or less in the description tag so be as concise as possible.

Let’s use the photography example again. Your site is based on digital photography. So your description tag should say that your site is related to digital photography. Example description tag: “Digital photography site, digital photos, buy digital photos, print digital photos”.

The search engine bot/web crawler will see this and will place the site in relevant search results. So if someone searches for digital photos, they should see your site somewhere on the list.

The same principle can be applied to any and every site. Good description tags are as simple as a good, concise description of what your site is about.

How to use the Title tag Effectively.

There are some misconceptions about Title tags. People have said in the past(and some still do today) that a good, effective Title tag consists of keywords. However, this is just not true. Every good title tag consists of two things—the name of the site and a brief description of what is on the site.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Title tag is also the title of your listing in any search engine. Why would you want your title listing to consist of keywords? It won’t help your site at all—it will actually hurt it because people are less likely to take the site seriously due to silly keywords. Another thing worth noting is that the Title tag should never be more than 80 characters. Generally speaking, the briefer the Title tag is, the better. So strive to be concise!

So what is a good, effective Title tag? Well, a good, effective Title tag should first have the name of your web site (so if it’s www. digitalphotography.com it should be “Digital Photography”) and then a short description of the site. In this example, you could put “Digital Photography – Buy and Print Digital Photos Here”. This is both an accurate and effective Title tag for this particular site. Apply this principle to your site and you will have a good and effective Title tag.

Meta tags and titles are incredibly useful to your site. Master the above techniques and you will be able to create effective meta tags and titles that will help your site earn a higher search engine ranking and more visitors!

Choosing A Business That’s Right For You

July 18th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Tim Knox

Q: I really want to start my own business, but I have no idea what business would be best suited for me. I’m also eager to get started, but I don’t want to pick the wrong business just because I’m impatient. How should I go about deciding what business would be best for me?

– Samuel J.

A: Before I answer your question, Samuel, I want you to reach around and pat yourself on the back for not letting your eagerness push you into making a wrong decision. All too often we entrepreneurs tend to let our impatience drive us to make decisions that we later regret. In business such haste can be very costly, indeed.

I always compare starting a business to jumping into a pool of freezing water. There are typically two types of entrepreneurs who take the plunge.

The first are the “Toe Testers.” These are those cautious folks who just stick their big toe in the pool to gauge the temperature of the water. It is for these careful entrepreneurs that the phrase “testing the waters” was coined. Toe Testers enter the business pool slowly, a little bit at a time. The lesson to be learned from Toe Testers is to start slowly and don’t feel like you have to wade in too fast. Ease into the business pool gradually to make sure it’s right for you. Remember, many entrepreneurs realize that the business world is not right for them only after they are in it up to their necks. And that’s when the term “sink or swim” takes on a whole new meaning.

The next type of entrepreneur is the “High Diver.” These are those fearless souls who climb the ladder and dive into the business pool head first without worrying about the depth of the water or the dangers that lurk beneath the surface. It is for these entrepreneurs that the phrase “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” was coined. Quite often these entrepreneurial daredevils find themselves drowning in unknown waters or end up with their heads buried in the bottom of the pool.

Both types of entrepreneurs may find success, depending on how well equipped they are to handle the water they are diving into. Here are a few ideas to help better prepare you for the plunge.

** Let your experience be your guide. Start with what you know. If you have spent twenty years working as an accountant or you love to build wooden toy trains as a hobby, consider how you can take that experience and turn it into a successful business. You might also find a great business idea right under your nose. Look around your workplace. Do you see needs that are going unmet or can you think of a better way of doing something? If so, you might have the seed for a profitable business.

** Do what you love and enjoy what you do. I can’t emphasize this enough. Many people start a business for the wrong reason: to get rich. While it is true that many millionaires in this country made their fortunes from their own business ventures, that should not be your sole motivation for starting a business. If you don’t enjoy what you do, you will not be successful, at least not from a mental point of view. Sure, the monetary rewards can be tremendous, but the mental anguish of working in a business you don’t enjoy is a high price to pay. I talk to entrepreneurs all the time who are running successful businesses, but are so unhappy as a result that they literally make themselves sick. If you don’t enjoy what you do the business will become a chore, not a joy.

** Don’t reinvent the wheel, just make it better. Many first time entrepreneurs assume that they have to come up with a new business idea to be successful. That simply is not true. Most successful businesses are born not of innovation, but of necessity. Instead of trying to come up with an idea that changes the world, take a look at the world around you and see where there might be a void that needs filling or a business concept that needs improvement.

Many successful businesses have been built by taking a traditional business and making it better. Domino’s Pizza was certainly not the first to offer home delivery of pizza, but they were the first to guarantee it would be delivered piping hot to your door in 30 minutes or less. Amazon.com was not the first company to sell books, but they were one of the first that would let you buy books from the comfort of your own home while sitting in your underwear.

** Focus on a niche. Many businesses have gone broke trying to be all things to all people. The ability to offer a gazillion products under one roof is all well and good for Wal-Mart, but not for most new small businesses. Try to identify a niche that you would enjoy working in and think about starting a business therein. If you love to work outdoors, consider starting a landscaping business. If you enjoy working with numbers, think about becoming an accountant or CPA. When’s the last time you had your gardener do your taxes? You get the idea. Focus on a niche and become an expert in your field.

** A franchise might be an option. Many new entrepreneurs consider buying a franchise operation instead of starting a business from scratch. Franchises are a good way to jumpstart the process because they have already done much of the hard work for you. They have proven the business model, established guidelines for running the business, spent millions of dollars on establishing the brand, etc. Buying a franchise is typically a very expensive and involved process that is beyond the scope of this article. The best thumbnail of advice I can give you is to thoroughly investigate the franchisor and the opportunity, use your own attorney to do the deal, and read the fine print in the franchise agreement.

** It’s hard to swim in a crowded pool. If the business pool is already filled with other companies doing the same thing you want do, chances are you will fail in the face of established competition. To succeed in such a crowded pool you will have to do something to stand out from the crowd (and I don’t mean greeting customers while wearing a bright red Speedo). If you can’t quickly and easily differentiate yourself from a large group of competitors, you’re better off choosing another business.

** Above all, take your time. Whatever business you choose to start, I encourage you to take the time required to make an informed, intelligent decision. Think about starting part time while you still have your current job (and income) to fall back on. Talk to friends and associates who use the product or service you will provide to see if they would consider become paying customers.

Remember, in business you can end up swimming in success or sinking in failure. The key to your success might just lie in the sensitivity of your big toe.

Here’s to your success.

Building Your Team and Team Building

July 18th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Chris Carroll

For those of us in a Direct Sales type business, a natural way to grow your income and business is through building a team. A lot of companies preach that this is the Only way to make real money. That may be true, but only the people that are already successful in their business and are prepared will be successful at building a team.

Building a team is hard work. Yes, it may be joyful and fun, but it is work! You must work at it all of the time. Talking to people and being excited about your business is the best way to start, grow and maintain your team.

Some reps are successful at newspaper ads; some at planting seeds at parties; some at chatting with people, but any way that you handle the function of recruiting still means a maintenance of the team by continuing to recruit each day.

Talking and actually interviewing the prospect is an awesome way to find out their goals and dreams. Why do they want to join this business? What sparked their desire to join today? Have they used the product before? How are they going to sell the product and to whom? What are they going to use the extra money for? By having this type of information, you can tailor their training and follow up to their personal situation.

People come and go and that is a natural occurrence. Some find the business not to their liking. Some people’s expectations are large and they may not make money right away. Some just get tired and leave. Whatever the reason, it happens.

But as you add to your team, they will need your continued support and training. You must continually build your team with people and then build your team with knowledge.

Train your team to be just like you. Show them how to duplicate yourself. Are you great in sales? Share all of your tips with them. Are you awesome are growing your team? Show them what you do. Teach them what makes You awesome and they too will become that way. Show them how you explode your business and they will do it as well. Make yourself duplicatable and they too will show their team the same. Now you are growing!

The more you build your team with knowledge, the more you build your team’s moral and keep the excitement in place. If we could all stay as excited as we were when we first joined our company, think how awesome your team would be today. So spark their interest and get them excited again about the business. Use their goals and dreams!! Remind them why they got into this business. Be excited when you talk to them. Let them know that you Love your job!

Never forget that people are in the business for a multitude of reasons. Some only want personal sales. Some want part time work to pay a few bills and very few are full timers. Watch how you spend your valuable time. 80% of your time should be spent on the top 20% of your producers. Don’t neglect any one, but realize that you want your time best spent where you are going to get a return. If someone is only in the business for personal sales, don’t spend days with them showing them how to recruit. The chances of that are slim. Instead, show them how to grow their customer base and save the other stuff for those that want the information on recruiting. Spend your time wisely.

Keep tabs on all of your reps, because things do change and some day they will be asking for your help with a different portion of the job. Use the information you gathered when you interviewed them to identify their goals and inspire them. As they grow their business, you too will be successful and efficient in your own business and your business will have come full circle.

You inspire them and they inspire you!

Congratulations! You are awesome and successful!

Time Management

July 17th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

By: Crystal Miller

My husband said to me the other day, “I wish there were 26 hours in our day, then I could get everything accomplished!” I had to laugh because I myself had those thoughts; if we just had more time we could accomplish much more or at the very least we could actually get enough sleep! ~smile~.

Well since we have no chance to increase the hours in our day we have to evaluate the time we have and how well we are using it. We need to ask ourselves, are we being the best steward possible of our time? Are we valuing our hours as a vital resource and using them as wisely as possible?

With the 24 hours that we do have in a day we know that many of those hours are already claimed. We need to sleep, eat, shower, relax, spend time with family and husband etc. After these hours are subtracted what we have left is what we have to work with each day.

To make the most out of each day begin to view your time differently. More time won’t suddenly appear but being conscious of how our time is used during the day will help us to streamline and make better decision. I will share a few of my time management tips that I use and maybe it will help you in your goal towards better time management!

Become more efficient with your time. Take time to examine how you do things and your methods and see if they can be altered to be time friendly. Can you do more than one thing at one time? Can you combine trips and have only one or two days out of the house a week to run errands? Cook a double portion of a meal and freeze one for another day, wipe down your bathroom sink and counters at the same time in the morning that you are getting yourself dressed.

Train your children to help you. In the long run this will be one of the biggest time management helps to you. By the time my children are 10 to 12 years old they are completely responsible for their own rooms, their laundry, their sheets and they have regularly assigned chores to do each day. Keep everyone on a routine and hold them accountable for their daily jobs. Do your chores at the same time as they are working to help increase moral and make sure everyone is staying focused. Don’t forget to turn on some music while you work! It does add to the enjoyment of what you are doing.

Be aware of things that rob your time. Over commitment to outside responsibilities is a biggie! Keep a list of some of the more important goals you have and refer to this when you are asked to participate in something. It may be a simple reminder to you of your priorities and it will allow you to see if a commitment made will be in keeping with these goals.

The telephone is another time robber. I don’t have a message machine. The reason I don’t have one is basically I don’t have enough time to spend calling people back. If someone needs me they will have to spend the time calling me and catching me at home. Plus there is always email! Obviously that method won’t work for everyone but it works well for me. Unplugging the phone is another way to not allow time on the phone to take up too much of your day.

Yet another time robber is too many activities for your children. I once had a key chain that referred to mom as the “taxi driver”. After awhile I got rid of this key chain. ~smile~ I did not want to be a taxi driver for my children.

I decided it was more important to help them learn to be content with more time at home.

Routines are my best time management tool. A routine helps keep your day on track. If you want to learn to manage your time effectively then a routine is a critical key to being able to follow through with your daily tasks. There is a

difference between a strict schedule and a routine. A routine is a set daily habit of accomplishing your household tasks. Plan your daily routines to work for you. Don’t compare how someone else manages their day. Work to find what will accommodate your life.

Have a minimum amount that must get done daily and train your children to know what this expectation is. My children know that before anyone goes to bed the dishes are to be done, the floors are swept, vacuumed and washed (that may be more than most people would do but living in the country with a houseful of kids means that our floors require a lot of attention), the bathroom is wiped down and in order, laundry is going each day, the clutter is picked up.

One last thought on managing your time is to be reasonable about how much can be accomplished in your life. Keep your priorities in order and remember that neither you nor I are super-moms! We are just women with a heart for our mission in life to love and care for our families. Don’t take on more than you can handle, don’t expect more from yourself than is reasonable. Work on those priorities that have the greatest importance in your life. There may be another time and season for other things you may desire to do or accomplish.

Obviously time management is a proactive work! The day will go by no matter what. The question to ask ourselves is; did we use the time as well as we should have? Is there room for improvement in the way we use our time? Are my expectations on myself to high for my season in life? Keep your priorities straight and make changes to your routine to help you use your time as wisely as possible.

Does Owning More Blogs Mean More Adsense Profits?

July 16th, 2007 by The WAHM Shack

by Terry Detty

Do blog site owners who own more blogs make more Adsense profits? This is an interesting question to ask because there are well known bloggers who make huge profits from one single major blog. However there are also other equally well-known blog site owners who make their Adsense money from dozens of different blogs. So where does that leave somebody who is just starting out?

The key thing to remember about a blog site is that a blog’s main function is being a web log or online diary. As the term “online diary” suggests, this is where a blogger can generate a lot of interesting personal comment and intimate details and information about a particular niche subject or topic that they have chosen to cover. Blogs are quick and easy to set up. Blogs are a less expensive way of advertising your business

The fact is that a blog is hardly the place where you would want to reach for your credit card. Yet this does not make a blog less important. Blogs are classified as being increasingly important to any web based entrepreneur because it is where all the action is. In actual fact traffic is generated in large quantities at blogs and then re-directed to web sites for the actual sales transaction to be consummated.

On the other hand there is no denying the fact that putting your eggs in several baskets seems to work well with Adsense. Traffic volumes tend to fluctuate sometimes and if one site does not do well on a particular day then one of the dozen others will and in this way the blogger will be able to maintain their high daily sales and ultimately their big monthly check.

With the various online advertising and marketing tools available these days, it is not too difficult to run several blogs successfully and have each one attracting enough traffic for you to make significant revenue from Adsense. In fact you do not need a very big budget to be able to achieve this. You can for instance start with a small amount invested in PPC campaigns for each blog and then re-invest from the profit and returns you receive and in this way build up a huge targeted traffic for many of your blogs.

You can also combine this with free creative methods to attract traffic to each of your blogs.

This is not to say that anybody with just one blog is doomed to failure. Far from it, there are a number of advantages of having only one blog to focus and concentrate all you efforts on. More so if you are just starting out in online marketing. It is easier to try out things and be able to see the results of your efforts. Sometimes when you have too many blogs, monitoring their progress and the various programs and campaigns you are testing may prove to be quite challenging.

Ultimately it is up to you as an individual to decide what feels more comfortable for you – one Adsense blog or several.
